The Potter’s House
I remember the words of the teacher saying, "the lesson for today’s class is forming something from this clump of clay into a creative object. As I listened to the teacher, I thought to myself, what am I to make from this pile of clay? I obsessed over this because I don’t have talent in creating anything from clay. I tried and tried but failed. I demolished the want-to-be object into that same clump of clay. I could not make anything pleasing to the eye. As I look around the room I noticed other students forming a beautiful form of art as though the hands of the potter was married to the clay in perfect unity.
I can not tell you how many times I pounded the what-to-be sculpture back into that clump of clay. The clay was becoming something that I was forming, despite the lack of artistry in me.
There are several references in the Bible regarding a potter and clay. I would like to use Jeremiah 18:1-11
1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD : 2 "Go down to the potter's house, and there I will give you my message." 3 So I went down to the potter's house, and I saw him working at the wheel. 4 But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.
5 Then the word of the LORD came to me: 6 "O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter does?" declares the LORD. "Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel. 7 If at any time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be uprooted, torn down and destroyed, 8 and if that nation I warned repents of its evil, then I will relent and not inflict on it the disaster I had planned. 9 And if at another time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be built up and planted, 10 and if it does evil in my sight and does not obey me, then I will reconsider the good I had intended to do for it.
11 "Now therefore say to the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem, 'This is what the LORD says: Look! I am preparing a disaster for you and devising a plan against you. So turn from your evil ways, each one of you, and reform your ways and your actions.'
The Lord is in control of everything. We, as people, have a choice, but when we choose to follow Jesus, we put ourselves into the Potters hands to be formed and thus pleasing to the Creator.
Can the pot (clay) give advice to the potter? Sometimes, we don’t understand what God in doing to a nation or a person. God has absolute sovereignty in your life. In saying this, you are given the opportunity to turn from your evil ways (choice), but if you don’t, it is just for God to destroy you.
Focus: Pray that the Potter can formed the clay (you)-choice.
